12/29/2021 (Permalink)

Water losses can happen at any time of the day even at 2am in the morning. Luckily SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas is ready 24 hours a day and can get on site within an hour.  Below are some great ideas on what to do and what not to do when you have water damage.

What To Do After Flooding

  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather loose items from floors.

What NOT To Do After Flooding

  • Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
  • Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  • Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Don't use television or other household appliances.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

What to expect

We understand that when you call us, you may be feeling confused, stressed, and vulnerable. You need an expert to guide you through this crisis. SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas has the specific water damage training and experience to help you through this tough time. We specialize in water damage restoration—in fact, it's the cornerstone of our business.

What to Expect

When you call, we will ask several questions regarding your water damage emergency. These questions will help us determine what equipment and resources to bring, including how many trained SERVPRO Professionals may be needed.

Our SERVPRO Representative will ask several questions:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Your insurance information (if applicable)
  • The street address of the water-damaged home or business
  • When did the flooding or water damage occur?
  • What caused the water damage (if known)?
  • Is there electricity available (on-site)?

Different types of smoke

12/29/2021 (Permalink)

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Fire damage

12/29/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas gets asked multiple questions daily about whether or not to file a claim.  SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas does not have the power to act like an adjuster nor do we answer questions that should be answered by a licensed adjuster.  We can however give a ball park figure in regards to a fire loss damage which could help you determine if it's worth filing a claim or not.  I would say the most asked question in regards to ANY type of loss when it comes from a connected neighbor is "should I still file a claim?" I always recommend filing a claim because in most cases these types of losses will include the HOA and can take a long period of time to figure out who's responsible for what (they have to read through the CC&R's) which could take weeks.  If both parties file a claim then in most cases each insurance will cover its own and determine who's at fault behind curtains and subrogate against the at fault party.

How to prevent Coronavirus from spreading in your business

11/8/2021 (Permalink)

CDC recommendations describe that people should wear masks in all public settings and when around people outside of their household; especially when other social distancing practices are difficult to maintain. Masks may help prevent people who have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others.

The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. Learn how COVID-19 spreads and practice these actions to help prevent the spread of this illness.

How to Prevent Coronavirus Spreading for Businesses

To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, make sure your employees take these actions:

  • Clean your hands very frequently.
Try washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds as often as possible. When washing your hands in a sink isn't readily doable, using a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol will also be effective for preventing the spread of COVID-19.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Distance yourself from others at least 6 feet to maintain a safe range in case of a cough or sneeze.
  • Wear a mask.
Cover your mouth and nose with a mask when around others, you may still be able to spread the virus even if you don't have any symptoms.
  • Cough and sneeze into a tissue or your elbow completely covering your nose/mouth.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue directly into the trash. Remember to always wash your hands afterwards.
  • Disinfect surfaces daily.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces daily throughout the workplace.

Learn how we can help maintain a clean and disinfected workplace for your business through our Las Vegas viral pathogen cleaning program. Certifying local commercial businesses in the Valley every day with our storefront badge that gives customers and employees peace of mind. We use EPA approved disinfectants with our proprietary cleaning procedure that follows CDC guidelines and industry best practices from the IICRC and RIA.

Our process maintains a clean and disinfected work environment for stores, restaurants, and commercial facilities throughout the Las Vegas Valley. Choose SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas for all COVID cleaning and restoration needs to ensure a job well done.

Fire damage

10/28/2021 (Permalink)

When a fire occurs in the home it can cause long lasting damage if not handled properly.  SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas will make sure to send an estimator over right away. Our estimators and production managers work closely with homeowners and insurance companies to insure your house is put back the way it was before.

We have just as much experience with fire damage as we do with water damage and restoration. When handling large fire losses, there is an added importance in a proper estimate. SERVPRO has a responsibility to salvage what we can with the property while keeping the structure intact and eliminating odors. We have experience in knowing exactly what drywall are salvageable and which are not. Many porous items are very hard to salvage like couches, mattresses, and other fabric materials. The goal is to restore the dwelling to its former glory. Vent cleaning will usually be needed for this level of cleaning to assure smoke and odors are eliminated completely. For some of these more devastating fire losses, it is very important to have it handled by experienced professionals. There is nothing worse than having a lingering smell from a past fire damage. Choose SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas for all fire restoration needs to ensure a job well done.

Water damage in a storm

3/24/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage is not always the broken pipes or failed angle stop or overflowed toilet. Water damage also includes damage caused by storms. Although Las Vegas is known to be a desert where it is mostly hot and dry, most people that move here are surprised about the storm seasons and the amount of water that can fall within a few minutes, we do get our hit of the monsoon season which can cause higher levels of humidity and inches to feet of water. In some cases, the water will rise above the slab line allowing water to intrude into the structure causing small to large amounts of area damage. SERVPRO of Las Vegas is ready to handle these types of emergencies. Our crews are trained and skilled in knowing how to communicate with your insurance company to ensure that your storm damage loss is handled properly with no secondary damages. Our estimators can come out on site before you file a claim and provide a free estimate and advise you on the steps taken to properly handle your loss.

Smoke and Soot

12/29/2020 (Permalink)

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke. A wet smoke and a dry smoke. There are also different types of soot residue that will determine what kind of smoke damage occurred after the fire. Before restoration begins, We at SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

When water damage can turn to mold

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

Many times, a home can be exposed to some kind of water damage, big or small, that is not handled by professionals or dried out correctly. In these instances, mildew and mold can grow extremely fast creating secondary issues for the home. Mold and mildew can actually begin growing 24 to 48 hours after contact with water. It is hard to see this because it happens inside your walls. It is very important to make sure any water damage issues are handled correctly to prevent the possible growth of mold. SERVPRO is always here, ready to help with any water damage issues however big or small, because it is better to handle these accidents properly the first time to prevent the possibility of mold.

Roof leaks during a rain storm

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

In Vegas, it isn’t very often that we have large rain storms but when they come, they can expose weak points in your roofing that may result in a leak. So, what can you look out for to help prevent these water leaks from happening on your roof? Here are a number of areas that may have weak spots on your roof.

  • Shingles- Over time shingles can crack and become so worn out that they lose the ability to keep water out. It is important to keep an eye on this to see if it time to replace sections of shingles on the roof.
  • Attic ventilation- If the attic is not properly ventilated, this can create high levels of condensation which will be worsened by heavy rainfall. Making the chances of a serious leak more likely.
  • Skylights- Skylights are cool features to have in the home but if the framing is not sealed properly or corrosion has left little gaps in the framing, it can cause a big issue. Make sure to check the framing.
  • Other Corrosion- There are other components on the roof that over time can corrode. Small metal fasteners and other metal components can rust and create space for small leaks. It is good to have these small pieces replaced every so often.

Las Vegas Monsoon?

10/30/2020 (Permalink)

What to expect from Las Vegas monsoon season?

Monsoon season is short and only lasts for about half of summer. This desert climate does receive rain and during monsoon season the rains can come down in short heavy spurts. It is important to know what to look for and what precautions to take when monsoon season comes again.

When do we have monsoon season?

Monsoon season can start around the middle part of summer and last till some time in September. So, the season usually lasts a couple months and can sometimes start slightly sooner and last a little longer than expected.

How to recognize when a monsoon might start?

Monsoon season can be identified with very hot and slightly more humid mornings with more than normal cloud coverage. Once we get into the afternoon evening the winds may pick up and the sky will most likely darken. The showers last only a few hours at the most and the same process will continue the next day.

Dangers of monsoon season

It is important to be able to identify these types of rainfall because they can cause flooding in homes and down busy streets. Cautious driving and home preparedness are essential to ensure that monsoon season is a breeze. It’s not very often we get good rainfall in Vegas so it’s best to enjoy the rain we get instead of stressing about not being prepared.

SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas recent large-scale commercial work

10/30/2020 (Permalink)

Just in the past month SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas has had 3 sizable commercial water losses. All three of which were as a result of the sprinkler system going off and running for a bit too long. This highlights the importance that commercial buildings should have a well-organized ERP in place. These water losses have had damage on multiple stories of the building. In our experience the water damaged can lessen as you reach the ground level but these jobs had substantial damage and need for mitigation across all affected areas. Our franchise is prepared with sufficient equipment and enough man power to handle any of these larger commercial water losses. Choose SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas for all commercial restoration needs to ensure a job well done.

How SERVPRO approaches extensive fire damage

10/30/2020 (Permalink)

We have just as much experience with water damage as we do with fire damage and restoration. When handling large fire losses, there is an added importance in a proper estimate. SERVPRO has a responsibility to salvage what we can with the property while still keeping the structure intact and eliminating odors. We have experience knowing exactly what drywall are salvageable and which are not. Many porous items are very hard to salvage like couches, mattresses and other fabric materials.

Storms pose a threat to your business over time

10/30/2020 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO we have seen our fair share of collapsed sections of roofing due to standing water. Many of these incidents are a result of not staying updated with the buildings needs. Before entering another season of questionable weather, take the time to look at a few weak points in your building that might need some attention and upkeep. Get someone to check the roof and identify any spots that may have staining. This is a sign of repeated standing water on the roof. Check if there is any corrosion or warping on the flat roof as well. These issues can lead to big water issues down the road so it is important to spot them and fix them before it turns into a larger problem.

Emergency Ready Plan (ERP) Q&A Residential

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when trying to prep your family and home for a disaster.

Q1: What are the most common natural disasters that can occur in my city?

A1: Here in the Las Vegas area, we can expect to see flash floods, fires during summer months and perhaps an earthquake.

Q2: What are some of the first actions we should take during a particular disaster or accident?

A2: For a flash flood, one of the first actions that should be taken is to turn off all utilities and electrical devices. Shut off the electricity. Make sure not to tamper with electric equipment if you are wet or standing in water. Then move any important belongings to higher ground. For forest fires and earthquakes, it is very important to shut off the gas line immediately and pay close attention to authorities.

Q3: How do I ensure that these steps can be taken quickly and safely?

A3: When setting up your ERP, it is important to survey the home and locate the different key shut off locations for electric power, gas and water. It can be helpful to color coordinate the water with blue paint, the electric with yellow paint, and the gas shut off with red paint. That way it is highly visible and easy to remember for all family members. It is also helpful to take pictures of each shut off location around the home with a short description on how to turn off that utility. Having an organized set up with pictures and keys for each utility shut off can help reduce the chance of further damage and bodily injury in these scenarios.

These are a few tips that may be helpful for your family in case of an emergency. There is always more to learn about preparing for natural disasters but an ERP is a good place to start. If you are a SERVPRO customer, feel free to ask us about helping you set up an ERP at your home.

IICRC water damage categories

10/10/2020 (Permalink)

Since we are an IICRC Certified Firm we follow their guidelines when determining category of water damage that occurs in a structure.

There are 3 Basic Categories of Water

Category 1 originates from a sanitary source and poses no substantial risk from dermal, ingestion, or inhalation exposure. Examples may be water from an broken angle stop under a sink.  However, it may not always remain clean after it comes into contact with other surfaces or materials that contain contaminants.

Category 2 contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort and/or sickness if contacted by humans. This category may contain potentially unsafe levels of micro-organisms or nutrients for micro-organisms, and other organic or inorganic matter.

Category 3 is grossly contaminated and may contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Such water sources may carry silt, organic matter, pesticides, heavy metals, regulated materials, or toxic organic substances.

Tips For Workplace Illness Prevention: COVID-19

10/1/2020 (Permalink)

Coronavirus disinfectant and commercial COVID-19 cleaning SERVPRO | Maintaining a disinfected and clean work environment for commercial facilities in Las Vegas, NV.

Ways to prevent home fires during the summer

6/29/2020 (Permalink)

We here at SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas deal with many house fires throughout the year, they are the most common disaster throughout the U.S and with the summer rolling in, here are some ways you can help prevent these:

#1. Don’t use fireworks at home
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, it’s always best to leave fireworks to the professionals and attend public fireworks displays instead.

#2. Be careful when grilling outdoors
Practice safe grilling this summer with these grilling fire tips:

• Always use your grill outdoors and far away from any structures.
• Clean your grill after every use to prevent a buildup of fat or grease that can cause a grease fire.
• Stabilize the grill on a flat surface to prevent it from tipping.
• Watch for gas leaks.
• Use charcoal starter fluid carefully. Don’t add starter fluid to the fire if it starts to go down.
• Have baking soda, a bucket of sand, or a fire extinguisher handy if you need to put out the fire. Never add water to a grease fire.

#3. Beware of lawn mower fires
You may use your mower with no signs of trouble then put it away in your garage without realizing the potential danger. If the fuel flowers from the tank into the engine while the engine is turned off, it will eventually cause a buildup of flammable vapors and a heat source can spark a fire in your garage. To reduce this risk, replace your fuel line every other year, inspect your carburetor for damage, and add fuel stabilizer every fill up.

#4. Have your air conditioner inspected
Regular maintenance and tune-ups of your heating and cooling systems can help prevent a fire.

#5. Reduce your risk of a kitchen fire
Throughout the year, kitchen fires are responsible for most home fires. The stovetop is the usual starting point for kitchen fires, not the oven. To reduce your risk of a fire, always remain in the kitchen when grilling, frying, or cooking on your stovetop. Make sure there are no flammable materials near the heat such as a paper towel dispenser or dish towel. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen but not too close to the stove and oven in case of fire and remember to suffocate cooking flames with a lid, not water.

#6. Check your dryer
Most dryer fires are the result of failing to clean the dryer vent ductwork as highly flammable lint will build up over time and may be ignited by the heat of the dryer. Clean your lint trap between every load and clean your dryer vent at least once a year with a special vent cleaning brush. Make sure the outside dryer exhaust vent allows hot air to escape.

#8. Make sure your smoke detectors work
You should have at least one smoke detector on every floor of your house in an area where it can be heard from every room of the house. Inspect your smoke detectors regularly to make sure they work and develop an escape plan that your entire household can practice in case of emergency. The escape route should have two possible exits from every room and these paths should be as free of clutter as possible.

5/13/2020 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO we like to take care of our belongs.  Just as if you get a new house or car or whatever kind of exciting new possession usually you’ll take care of it, maybe clean it constantly or if you’re like me make sure its always looking the way it was when you bought it and organized.  Just like you’d take care of these necessities SERVPRO does the same for its equipment, vans and the office.  Having our vans cleaned up, organized and ready help for a smooth and fast process.  It’s the worst when you get out on-site and you can’t find any of your tools or the equipment isn’t cleaned properly so you end up calling the production manager to get a piece of equipment.  When your belongings aren’t taken care of time on job is wasted and when time is wasted then customers do not feel safe or confident in our work.

Water damage cleanup during the COVID-19 pandemic

5/13/2020 (Permalink)

With the COVID-19 pandemic our society has started practicing social distancing as a way to spread the virus to each other and especially those in the high risk category.

SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas has 17 plus years dealing with jobs that involve the inherent risk of potential harmful viruses and contaminants.  We have always provided PPE (personal protection equipment) to our employees during these jobs for their protection.

Now with the practice of social distancing we use the same PPE to not only ensure the safety of our workers but also the safety of you and those that occupy your home.  Our crew members wear N-95 dust masks or respirators and gloves from the moment they arrive at your residence.

All of our job site equipment is decontaminated after it leaves a residence and stored at the warehouse.  We also wipe down that same equipment before placing at newly flooded homes.

With these protocols we are doing everything possible to make sure you and your family are safe during your water damage cleanup.

Solar Panel Storm Damage

3/10/2020 (Permalink)

In the Las Vegas valley, the use of solar panels is becoming increasingly popular.  They can provide homeowners the ability to decrease their utility bills and are environmentally friendly.  However, some local homeowners may question their durability especially when it comes to severe storm type weather such as floods, high winds, hail damage, and monsoons. Here are some things you may want to consider.

Solar panels are durable but much like any building material, they are also vulnerable to storm damage which can flood and damage other parts of your home as well. Homeowners who have sustained storm damage in Las Vegas may find it helpful to contact us, especially if they have a flood at (702) 436-2555.

Common types of damage from a storm may include:

  • Roof leaks as a result of improper installation and/or directly from storm damage.
  • Scratches from large tree limbs or wind blown particles which can effect the panel's ability to function.
  • Lightning strikes can also damage solar panels.

What Las Vegans Consider To Be The Biggest Threat

Most homeowners local to Las Vegas, Nevada consider hail storm damage to be the biggest concern when installing roof mounted solar panels. Today, these panels are constructed to withstand the impact of hail. However, there are several different manufacturers of solar panels. So it is advisable to research the brand you plan to install and their durability to withstand hail storms.

As a homeowner you can seek the advice of your solar panel installer on the best way to care for your new panels. With their help you should be able to position the panels to help them work as efficiently as possible while avoiding possible damage from trees and shrubs. Reach out to us at SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas if you need help with structural damage to your property.

SERVPRO has three main tools we use to find these reading: Infrared, non-penetrating moisture reader and penetrating moisture reader. In the photo is show the penetrating moisture reader. The penetrating moisture reader is the one we like to use the most because its pins allow for the best and most accurate reading. The only downfall to this reader is when we need to find moisture behind a hard surface like tile. For tile we use the non-penetrating moisture reader. For more information read about the non-penetrating moisture reader on our website.

In some cases, during a water damage, a pack out is required. Pack out includes profession boxing, bubble wrapping and inventory of all items in the affected areas. This usually happens when SERVPRO needs to remove damaged flooring throughout a large portion of the house. When large areas of flooring are removed, they must be put back which means items such as couches, tables, china cabinets, TV stands, coffee tables, pianos and other large items need to be placed somewhere safe to help minimize damage and help the contractor properly lay the flooring. SERVPRO has trained technicians and a warehouse able to hold multiple pack outs at a time. After the project is complete SERVPRO will bring these items and place them back in the areas they belong. These pack outs are helpful when a storm damages your dwelling because of a flood.

Water Damage mitigation, Las Vegas

Water damage caused by heavy amounts of rain

Water damage isn’t always the busted pipe or failed angle stop or overflowed toilet. Water damage also includes damage caused by storms. Although Las Vegas is known to be hot and dry we do get our hit of the monsoon season which can cause higher levels of humidity and inches to feet of water. Some cases the water will rise above the slab line allowing water to intrude into the structure causing small to large amounts of areas damage. In this photo is shown the aftermath of one of these storms. SERVPRO needed to cut and expose the outside walls and dry the framing properly. Also, SERVPRO placed a small containment to seal a window which might allow the humidity from the outside to affect and slow down the dry out of the inside. SERVPRO was still able to dry out the structure in 3 days which allowed for a quicker build back and a happier customer.

If the drywall does not show nails then SERVPRO will try to clean and save the wall if possible. If after the cleaning the walls smells heavily of smoke then SERVPRO will request removal. If a fire hits your house it’s always best to know who to contact. While the work is going on it is not advised to be entering in and out of the home because the structure can sometimes not be safe. Water damage can cause secondary damages if not dried out properly.  Even though we are in Las Vegas, which can be very dry and very hot it by no means, means that mold is impossible. When water gets trapped between walls or in other tight places it can start to create its own greenhouse effect.  When this happens mold can begin to grow within anywhere from 1-3 days.  It's important to immediately call out a SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas estimator to test all wet areas and make sure the moisture reading are safe.  Condos seem to be a huge trap for mold mainly because there are a lot of times where leaks are not detected until it's too late or tenants have water issues that they take care of themselves without letting the homeowner know.  Because of this we know to be very cautious when a condo leaks.  If you are a tenant it's important to let the homeowner so they can send SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas out for a FREE inspection.

Storm Damage Las Vegas

1/2/2018 (Permalink)

Last year it seemed like Las Vegas received a lot more rain than normal.  Not only did it seem like we got more rain but when it rained it seemed to rain from every angle.  Sometimes it's hard to see where the water ends or even begins.  SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas has advanced technology to help find and dry the areas before they receive secondary damages.  In this photo a SERVPRO project manager is using an infrared on his phone to help identify the affected areas.  Once these areas are identified SERVPRO will double verify they are wet with a moisture reader, either penetrating or non-penetrating.  Infrareds are helpful but must be double check only because infrareds will identify cold areas only so there could be false readings.  The homeowner was captivated with the technology SERVPRO provided and was impressed with the knowledge portrayed.

Mold usually means that water has been trapped for a period of time.  In some cases it's because a water loss occurred and wasn't cleaned up properly or a leak was so small that it was never detected until it's too late.  In this photo SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas is using a BIG air scrubber and a HEPA vacuum to help clean the affected area.  This loss was caused by a faulty roof which was slowly leaking then a wind storm came by causing massive amounts and rain to fall through big opening.  The insurance company recommended a licensed company to get on site with the knowledge to do the work.  The homeowner was recommended to contact SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas.  SERVPRO is a mold remediation professional willing to take on any size of loss.

Mold can be hard to find.  In most cases mold is hidden and found when another loss happens.  In this photo it shows an air scrubber used to collect mold spores while doing demo on a job site.  The dwelling complex owner had multiple company's out to bid the project and although SERVPRO came out higher SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas, according to the homeowner SERVPRO "had the most knowledge and felt to be the most trustworthy" in regards to the situation.  While on site SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas identified the affected areas, next they set containments in the appropriate areas and protected items no affect with plastic.  SERVPRO then set the equipment needed which in this case was a couple small air scrubbers in two separate areas on site and then demo with proper cleanup was performed.  After SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas completed the final clean a post testing was done to insure proper remediation was performed.

Fire Damage, should I file a claim if the fire started at my neighbors?

1/2/2018 (Permalink)

Las Vegas has some interesting water. We actually have such hard water then over a less period of time this hard water can corrode pipes, angle stops, water heaters and valves we use on a daily.  When pipes get corroded they burst causing sometimes massive amounts of water. This is one of our air movers we use, with a dehumidifier, to help with the dry down.  It is very important to have the right equipment and most important to know how to use it. SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas has the skill and ability to handle any kind of loss and any size.  With proper dry down from trained professionals we can stop secondary damages and more importantly get your place back to where it was before.

In this photo a SERVPRO technician is properly handling a mold remediation

If water damage occurs it is best to have professionals take care of it.  If it's small then it is best to get an estimate and scope of work by an estimator who has the right equipment to find out how much water is in a material as well as how far its spread.  When water isn't handles correctly mold can form and when that same area gets affected again mold can spread and become big and spores can cause mold to find other locations and a small leak could turn into a big mold remediation.  In this commercial building that just happened.  The owners sent out professionals to remediate the mold.  SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas was able to treat the mold properly and make the business a safe working environment again.

James Cleaning up a smoke damaged property in Las Vegas

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

In the Photo James is dressed in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  He is using SERVPRO's approved chemical mixture to clean Dry Smoke from a commercial property effected by an electrical fire.

Understanding Mold

Microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, so removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and they may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Let your nose lead the way. Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher than normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

The Mold Remediation Process

Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our “typical” process:

  1. Emergency Contact - (702) 436-2555

The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask a series of questions to help us determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel.

  1. Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect your property for visible signs of mold. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view. We use various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources.

  1. Mold Containment

Our professionals use various containment procedures to prevent the spread of mold. We may use advanced containment procedures like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process. All fans and heating and cooling systems will be turned off to prevent the spread of mold.

  1. Air Filtration

Our specialized filtration equipment allows our Professionals to capture microscopic mold spores out of the air. We utilize powerful “air scrubbers” and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in process.

  1. Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. We’ll use antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. It may be necessary to remove and dispose of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting, to remediate heavy mold growth.

  1. Cleaning Contents and Belongings

We clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, clothing, and other restorable items affected by mold. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and disinfect your belongings. We’re also trained to remove odors and deodorization using fogging equipment.

  1. Restoration

Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may have been removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business. The restoration step gets your home or business back to normal.

Does Your Las Vegas Home Have A Mold Problem?

7/1/2016 (Permalink)

In Las Vegas, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Las Vegas Smoke and Soot Cleanup

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Las Vegas home

A fire broke out in the home located in Las Vegas. This photo shows the mess left behind after the fire was put out.  SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas was called to clean up the aftermath.

Las Vegas Home owners: Follow These Mold Safety Tips If You Suspect Mold

6/3/2016 (Permalink)

Be careful! Without proper training, you could be spreading mold throughout your home.

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.
